Exposure Visit to Palliyakkal Rice Mill

An exposure visit was organized on 17.09.2025 by Kerala Marketfed for the Farmers of Changaramkulam Farmers Producer Co-operative Marketing Society Ltd (FPO) to study the functioning of Palliyakkal Rice Mill, Ernakulam. The mill operates under the Palliyakkal Service Co-operative Bank . The main objective of the visit was to provide the FPO with practical insights and technical knowledge for processing and marketing paddy collected from its farmers.

Background

Changaramkulam FPO has been actively involved in paddy procurement from its member farmers. To enhance farmer income and ensure value addition, the FPO has been exploring the possibility of milling the collected paddy, converting it into rice, and distributing it under its own brand. In this context, the idea was proposed to collaborate with Palliyakkal Rice Mill, which is known for its cost-effective milling and efficient packaging system.

Objectives of the Visit

The exposure visit was aimed at:

1. Understanding the operational structure of Palliyakkal Rice Mill.

2. Learning about the processes of paddy collection, milling, grading, and packaging.

3. Exploring cost-effective methods of rice milling and distribution.

4. Studying the role of co-operative institutions in supporting farmers and producer organizations.

5. Assessing the feasibility of replicating the model for Changaramkulam FPO.
