Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO): Empowering Agrarian Communities
A New Era of Collective Farming
The Government of India has launched a transformative Central Sector Scheme to form and promote 10,000 new FPOs nationwide, backed by a ₹6,865 crore budget. MARKETFED, as Kerala’s apex cooperative, is at the forefront of this movement, helping small and marginal farmers transition from “Producers” to “Agri-Entrepreneurs.”
What is an FPO? An FPO is a legal entity (Company or Cooperative) formed by primary producers. It allows small farmers to achieve economies of scale, giving them the bargaining power of a large corporation while maintaining their independent ownership of land.

Negotiate 15–30% better prices for inputs (seeds/fertilizers) and bulk-sell produce at higher market rates.

Shared access to high-tech farm machinery (tractors, drones) and logistics (storage/transport) on a cost-sharing basis.
Direct Market Access
Eliminate 3–4 layers of middlemen by selling directly to processors, exporters, or via digital platforms like e-NAM.
Financial Inclusion
Easier access to formal credit at lower interest rates (7–9%) and eligibility for Government equity grants up to ₹15–18 Lakh.
Professional Handholding
Strategic support for up to 5 years, covering management, tech-adoption, and value-addition (processing/packaging).

FPO Implementation Framework
FPOs in Kerala are promoted through three key agencies, each with a specific focus:
NCDC
Focuses on FPOs registered under Cooperative Societies Acts (Marketfed’s core strength).
SFAC
Focuses on FPOs incorporated under the Companies Act.
NABARD
Supports FPOs under both legal structures.
